UPMC: TelePathology
The American Telemedicine Association Special Interest Group
Our Mission

The Special Interest Group (SIG) is now in the process of developing telepathology guidelines and working to gain approval for telepathology reimbursement from Medicare.

The goal of the Special Interest Group (SIG) is to provide leadership and support for individuals charged with developing and managing telepathology systems. Though telepathology has attracted great interest in the past ten years, implementation of effective systems has been difficult. Now, with several system running and with LIS vendors beginning to include imaging in their standard modules, the next several years will be important for developing consensus on issues such as:

  • Telepathology Standards
  • Appropriate Use
  • Laboratory Information System/Hospital Information System integration
  • Limitations of Static, Real Time and Robotic Systems
  • Technical Advances
  • Liability
  • Reimbursement
  • Security
